Foster Care and Caring for an Autistic Child

  • Aim
  • To enable foster carers to confidently look after a child or young person who has been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.

Learning Outcomes

  • To be more aware of what autism is and how it is diagnosed
  • Appreciate some of the difficulties an autistic child may experience living in foster care
  • Understand some problems when diagnosing children with autism whilst living in foster care
  • Know about some of the challenges caring for an autistic child may bring and how to seek support
  • Identify some positives in caring for a child with autism

Autism Training for Professionals – An Introduction

  • Aim
  • An introduction course designed for child care professionals to understand how to work with and support children with an ASD and their families.

Learning Outcomes

  • Know about autism, how it is diagnosed and possible consequences for families and individuals
  • Appreciate some difficulties families of a child with an ASD may experience
  • Be aware about some of the challenges caring for an autistic child may bring and why families may seek support from professionals
  • Clarify the role of the professional when working with autistic children and their families
  • Become more confident in engaging autistic children and their families.

Autism and Safeguarding – Training for Childcare Professionals

  • Aim
  • This course is designed to enable childcare professionals to confidently assess and intervene when there are suspected safeguarding issues involving an autistic child.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand how autistic children may behave and be aware of possible explanations for any potential safeguarding behaviour
  • Know about safeguarding procedures and signs of possible maltreatment
  • Be aware of possible stresses experienced by families with an autistic child
  • Learn about robust assessment strategies when there is an autistic child
  • Identify available interventions with autistic children and their families

Fathers caring for a child with an ASD

  • Aim
  • This course is for fathers and men (resident and non-resident) who care for a child or young person with an autism spectrum disorder.

Learning Outcomes

  • Know about autism and how it is diagnosed
  • Appreciate personal and emotional difficulties which men may experience when caring for a child with an ASD
  • To know about some of the challenges caring for an autistic child may bring and how to seek support
  • To focus men (resident and non-resident with the child) on how to engage professionals and gain support
  • Identify some positives in fathering a child with autism

Training for Grandparents of Autistic Children

  • Aim
  • A course designed specifically for grandparents (and extended family members) of an autistic child. This course focuses on grandparents’ potential to support children and reflects on emotional challenges and resilience to maintain family

Learning Outcomes

  • Know about family roles and how they are negotiated / arranged
  • Appreciate pressures placed on extended family members and particularly grandparents
  • Discuss potential roles for grandparents and extended family members in caring for autistic children
  • Understand legal implications where grandparents (or extended family members) when looking after an autistic child
  • Identify sources of support available to grandparents and extended family members when caring for an autistic child

Training for Siblings of an autistic child

  • Aim
  • To help siblings of an autistic child understand their own needs and their potential roles within families.

Learning Outcomes

  • Know about family roles and how they are negotiated / arranged
  • Appreciate pressures placed on siblings living with an autistic child
  • Discuss potential roles for siblings
  • Identify sources of support available to siblings of children with an ASD
  • Agree some positives in being a sibling of a child with autism
